Veliko Tarnovo is located in the center of Bulgaria, halfway between Sofia and Varna. A city of numerous sights, Veliko Tarnovo is one of the busiest tourist centers in Bulgaria. Its unique location on the three hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora make it not only one of the most beautiful cities in the country, but also gives it a special charm and its own identity. A stroll through this ancient city can leave anyone speechless who sets foot on the narrow cobbled streets. Alternating with modern buildings, Renaissance houses seem to have bumped into each other. Each of them is a unique monument of architecture. Veliko Tarnovo is one of the few places where nature and man-made things complement each other to create an unexpected harmony.



The preserved cultural monuments in the city in a unique way combine the spirit of all eras and periods of Bulgarian history - from Antiquity to the present day. The first traces of inhabitants of the area date back to the distant 6th century BC. A Thracian settlement has been discovered on Tsarevets hill since the third millennium BC. During the Middle Ages, Tsarevgrad Tarnov was the pearl in the crown of the Bulgarian rulers. And after the Bulgarians rejected the Byzantine yoke in 1185, Tarnovo became the capital city and remained the capital of Bulgaria until the invasion of the Ottomans in Europe. After the liberation of the city by the Russian troops on July 7, 1877, the fateful Constituent Assembly of February 10, 1879 was held here, in the building of the Turkish inn. It was then that one of the most democratic European constitutions of its time was adopted - the Tarnovska. This historical act laid the foundations of the new Bulgarian state.



Today, Veliko Tarnovo is a modern European city, which is not only an administrative center, but also a tourist destination and a cultural center.
