Life in Kosovo is carefree – as you'll realize while sipping your morning coffee in the fresh air at Hadzhiyskata kashta, or the Hadzhiyska House, and watching the sun slowly illuminate the Rhodope Mountains opposite it. Kosovo is a Bulgarian village a few miles from the Narechenski Spa and a remarkable example of intelligent ecological tourism.



The first fans of this type of holiday stayed at the renovated Hadzhiyska House in the Kosovski Kashti, or Kosovo Houses, Complex in 2005. Its impressive two stores were built back in1853. Today, the stone walls, beams, and roof tiles have been restored in the style of the Revival Period and the six double and two triple bedrooms feature wood-carved ceilings, oak floorboards, wooden couches, and hand-woven blankets and rugs. The only sign that you are still in the 21st Century is the satellite TV and luxury bathrooms.



You are likely to spend most of your time in the barn, however. It has been converted into a tavern, where 40 people can gorge themselves on Rhodope banitsa with rice, patatnik, Smilyanski beans and cheverme, which is a whole lamb roasted in the huge fireplace. If you have had too much wine, go out for a walk. The mountain air works wonders.
